Description
An account of the resource
The treatise on the soul by the dominican Jacopo Campora from Genova, written in Bruges in 1432 and dedicated to the Venetian merchant Giovanni Marcanova, who put Campora up on the occasion of his stay in London, had a wide circulation both in mss. and printed editions. The work is conceived as a compendium in the form of a dialogue between the author and the dedicatee, mainly addressed to vernacular readers not acquainted with erudite and theological contents. Aristotle's On the Soul is a crucial source in Campora's work, but the author draws on other sources as well (e.g. Church Fathers).

La quale si può tener grande per el peso di sue numerose et gravissime sententie sì de philosophi come de theologi et sancti doctori de la fede. Cossa veramente da scriver di letre d'oro. Ma se la fareti imprimere: come io ve ne prego. Darasse oportunità a molti che cognoscano l'esser suo. Imperò che dentro a nui è celato il thesauro: col quale possemo vogliando: farse citadini del cielo. Questo thesauro è l'animo el quale è una certa substantia participe de rason acomodata al governo del corpo. L'animo illustrato di sapientia risguardando el suo principio cognosce si medesimo: inde pervene a l'intelligentia de l'anima: la quale poi liberata in tutto da ogni condition humana con li proprii ochi interiori fissi nel lume de dio contempla tutti i soi gaudii & securità. The treatise is followed by Francesco Petrarca's canzone Vergine bella che di sol vestita (RVF, 366) transcribed by the same hand ('Cançone morale de Misser Francesco Petrarcha da Fiorença in laude de la gloriosa Vergene Madona Sancta Maria', ff. 53r-55v). The other texts included in the manuscript are in Latin (with the only exception of the Rithmus in laudem Virginis Mariae gloriose, inc. 'O Maria stella de questo gran mare / che sei più dolce chel favo del miele', which seems to be rich in references to Petrarca's canzone to the Holy Virgin - but it is copied by a different hand). The copy of Campora is dated November 22nd 1469 (f. 52v).
