Anzi hora si promette d'essere a V.A.S. tanto più cara et dilettevole, quanto ell'è più perfetta contenendo di più il quarto libro, dove prima conteneva solamente i primi tre libri. V.A.S. da qui innanzi potrà a suo piacere con essa andare specolando hora i maravigliosi effetti secchi, che si fanno nella suprema regione dell'aria, come sono le stelle cadenti, le fiamme accese, i tizzoni, le comete et i venti: talhora gli humidi, che si generano in quella di mezzo, et in questa nostra quaggiù bassa, come sono le pioggie, le nevi, la brina et la rugiada. Et finalmente col pensiero potrà andare penetrando per tutta la terra, considerando le cagioni di tutti i metalli, et delle pietre così pre- ziose, come non preziose. Similmente alcune mutazioni et qualità comuni delle piante et quelle degli animali. Tutti questi effetti, sì come e' son varii et maravigliosi: così varii et maravigliosi piaceri et ricreazioni le apporteranno, i quali insieme saranno nobilissimi et di grandissimo valore. V.A.S. dunque di nuovo si degni di ricevere questa dottrina delle Metheore con animo tanto grato, et d'esserne cotanto protettore, quanto detta parte di Filosofia, et io insieme suo humilissimo et fedelissimo servo, lo speriamo et lo disideriamo ugualmente. Per queste cagioni il Filosofo occupandosi tutto intorno al vero, non può et non debbe attendere alla scelta delle belle parole, et a esprimere il suo concetto elegantemente, come molti più avvezzi nelle scuole de Gramatici et degli Humani-<183>sti che de Filosofi vorrebbero: et si danno ad intendere che quegli, i quali parlano barbaramente, non solo faccino gran torto alla Filosofia et a' nobili concetti suoi, non rivestendo et quella et quegli con ornamento di parole: ma quello che più importa ancora è che e' tengono per fermo, et così s'ingegnano di persuadere a gli altri, che questi così fatti Filosofi, che non curano della gratia delle parole, non intendino ancora bene le cose, et non meritino d'essere ascoltati, né che i loro componimenti siano letti: et perché tutto quello che piace al senso è facil cosa a persuadersi, et a credersi dalla maggior parte degli huomini, et la dolcezza del dire muove et diletta l'udito: di qui è che da molti anni in qua da molti de filosofanti si parlano et si insegnano i concetti di filosofia tanto più elegantemente, che non si faceva da quei di prima, quanto ancora questi cotanto eleganti sanno meno con verità et più alla grossa delle occultissime verità, et meno le sanno difendere dalle argomentazioni che si possono lor produrre contro, che quelli che e' chiamano barbari. Et andando così le cose seguitando in pochi anni la filosofia si ritroverrà più presto dipinta che vera ne' filosofanti, a' quali non più così degno nome converrà, ma il nome di gramatici et di humanisti, come di già è accaduto negli studii fuori d'Italia.
