The text (witnessed by ms. Vatican City, BAV, Ott. Lat. 2196) is unfortunately almost illegible because of a thin protective film stuck on the folios. Almost nothing is known about the author (an other work by him in Florence, BNC, ms. IX.139). As far as it is possible to get from the Vatican ms., the commentary refers to the edition of Aristotle's Poetics by Vincenzo Maggi.

Description
An account of the resource
Beltrami's notes to Bulgarini discuss the notion of allegory referring to several sources. The main frame of Beltrami's account is Aristotelian: as stated in the preface letter, he is following the division of Aristotle's text (Poetics) below Maggi and Piccolomini's editions. The main argument presented by the author concerns Aristotle's choice not to deal with allegory in the Poetics. The text deserves a broader analysis, since it focuses on a quite controversial topic within the late Renaissance literary debates.

Description
An account of the resource
The work is a treatise of moral philosophy conceived as a pedagogical tool since it follows the education and training of a noble man (gentiluomo) from childhood to first maturity. It is a sort of compendium/paraphrase of Aristotle's Ethics, but book 10 is left aside in order to make space for a chapter on marriage and economics (the latter based on Aristotle's Economics). The author promises a section on politics which was never written (though it is mentioned in the title).

Description
An account of the resource
The Discorso was written in 1565 by Francesco De Vieri on the occasion of Francesco I de Medici's wedding; it is thus dedicated to the duke and his wife, Johanna of Austria. The work, conceived as a thorough discussion of philosophy and its disciplinary subdivisions, is very rich in Aristotelian references concerning all the fields of knowledge. The Discorso, witnessed by a manuscript (now Paris, BNF, It. 965) which might the dedicatory copy, was later printed and provided with a prefatory epistle to the readers which approaches and discusses the author's choice to write (and publish) such a text in the vernacular.

<2r> <prologue> <inc> Essendo illustrissimo signor principe et serenissima reina cosa conveniente et ragionevole che tutti i sudditi dell'illustrissima eccellentia dell'uno et serenissima altezza dell'altra non solamente con l'animo si rallegrino et vi honorino grandemente in questo tempo di sì magnifiche et splendide nozze, ma etiamdio ne mostrino segni manifesti con l'opere esteriori. Di qui è che io ho giudicato esser ufitio mio il quale vi sono suddito ubligatissimo et fo professione di filosofia far un discorso di tutte le più nobili arti, delle dottrine morali, delle scientie specolative, et delle facoltadi istromentali, dimostrando qual sia il loro soggetto, et il lor fine, assegnando parimente a ciascuna la sua propria diffinitione. Et finalmente dimostrando che ordine o vero grado si convenga a ciascuna in una republica bene et giustamente ordinata, come tra tutte l'altre è questa (mercé di Dio dell'illustrissimo signor duca et al presente dell'illustrissima eccellentia vostra et di sua serenissima altezza). Et tutto questo farò hoggi vome filosofo non già per ricordare a quelle quanto dee esser loro a quore [sic] essa filosofia, ogni dottrina arte et facoltà istromentale che quanto a ciò sa benissimo ognuno che non occorre: ma sì bene per infiammare l'animo di ciascuna persona giuditiosa et ben costumata a honorarvi sopremamente a rallegrarsi et finalmete <2v> a disiderare che iddio vi mantenga felici lungo tempo. Havendo per questo mio discorso compreso di quanta importanza et di quanto honore siano a chi esercita le nobili arti, dottrine morali, scientie speculative et le facoltadi istromentali, le quali tutte con il favore di V.E. Illustrissima et di sua serenissima altezza sono per fiorire più l'un dì che l'altro. Ma cominciamo horamai a dar principio al sopradetto Ragionamento. /
<2v> <inc> La suprema cagione dalla quale dipende il tutto essendo la stessa bontà, la volse spiegare et comunicare a tutte le creature, essendo la somma sapientia perciò che l'ufitio del savio è porr'ordine et misura a tutte le cose. Di qui è che ella diede l'esser suo et la vita a tutte le creature dell'universo diversamente come piacque a sua maestà; et ricercandosi dove dee essere un ordine, gli estremi et il mezzo che gli congiunga insieme. <36v> <expl> Et me minimo servo di vostra illustrissima eccellentia et di sua serenissima altezza, ha infiamato et mosso a comporre questa opera, a cagione che io mostrasse a ciascuno quanto vi dee sommamente honorare et quanto io con tutte le potentie cognoscitive dell'animo mio v'osservi v'honori et desideri di servirle sempre. Esso iddio datore d'ogni potestà come d'ogni altri bene le mantenga felici lungo tempo. Et di quelle nasca cotal prole nella quale risplendano le divine vertudi de Padri et delle madri et delli altri antecessori dell'Illustrissima famiglia de Medici et della Reale et imperiale casa d'Austria, a cagione che Iddio in quelle sia sempre lodato et honorato, la patria fiorisca sempre di pietà, di iustizia et di tutte l'altre vertudi, et elleno vivano gloriose, così ne suoi successori come nelle memorie de buoni et de savi.

Altezza, et dal volermi ancora mostrare in qualche parte grato degl'infiniti benefici et favori che la casa mia (gl'huomini della quale per lo più hanno atteso alle lettere) ha ricevuti da quelle, come ognun sa, et particolarmente il non manco buono che dotto M. Francesco Verini, et io nipote suo. De' quali beneficii et favori racconterei qui buona parte, se non fossero noti a tutti, et se io non dubitasse che ciò mi fosse attribuito a vanagloria. Le cagioni poi, le quali m'hanno indotto a fare questa opera più tosto in lingua nostra, che in lingua latina sono molte: l'una è per essere io a quella più obligato, come più propria che la Latina et a me natia; l'altra per essere et a ragione tenutone in questi tempi
molto conto in Firenze et fuori; et finalmente per far giovamento a molti della mia patria et a forestieri, i quali impediti da honeste et giuste cagioni, non hanno potuto attendere alla lingua Latina, et nondimeno sono d'animo gentile, et desiderosi di intendere quello che faccia loro di mestiero per potere poi più sicuramente indirizare per la via delle vertù loro stessi et le loro famiglie: il premio delle quali vertù è l'immortalità della gloria et in questa vita mortale la tranquillità dell'animo.
