                <text>Francesco de Vieri's Vere conclusioni is a work divided in three main parts aiming to highlight all those philosophical issues in which Plato, Aristotle and Christian doctrine agree. The main purpose of the book, as the author states in the dedication letter to Baccio Valori, is to encourage the study of Plato within the university context sponsored by the Medici family. Through the study of Plato, it will be possible to understand better Aristotle (Vieri outlines here a 4-years programme of Platonic lectures: p. 5-6). In the meantime, the author does not overvalue the common trends of Platonism, Aristotelianism and Christianism since - as he clearly says - it is important to recognise what is peculiar to each philosophy. The last section of the work stands out in terms of references to modern sources, which are nonetheless employed throughout all the book. </text>

              <elementText elementTextId="88856">
                <text>The treatise — dedicated to Neri di Gino Capponi — is divided in three books, respectively dealing with the government of oneself, the government of the family and the government of the civitas (whereas books I and II systematically draw on Aristotle's Ethics and Politics, book III mainly concerns the history of Florence). Grendler 1973 just edited the third book. The BNC manuscript is a complete and very beautifully written copy of the text; the Riccardiana manuscript is made up of two different versions of the treatise, both incomplete (the second one includes several marginal and interlinear corrections). The case is worth studying in order to make the relations among the three manuscripts clearer. Cavalcanti is quite well known for his relationship with Gino Capponi as well as for his Historie fiorentine, but scholars — with the exception of Grendler — did not pay much attention to the treatise which still lacks in a modern critical edition.</text>

It apparently follows the order of Aristotle's Ethics, but it also focuses on Christian notions. The author (to whom the text is attributed by a later hand) might be the same Jacopo Soldani who was a disciple of Galileo as well as a member of the Accademia degli Alterati. He became quite famous as a satyrical poet, but no mention is made in the critical bibliography about his philosophical interests. Cf. Notizie letterarie ed istoriche intorno agli uomini illustri dell'Accademia fiorentina. Parte prima (Florence: Piero Matini, 1700), 291-292. Soldani is mentioned in a letter to Galileo by Mario Guiducci (18 December 1623): cf. Le opere di Galileo Galilei, IX (Florence: Società  editrice fiorentina, 1852), 53. An oration held in the Accademia degli Alterati by Soldani was published in 1609: Delle lodi di Ferdinando Medici gran duca di Toscana, orazione di Iacopo Soldani (Florence: Cristofano Marescotti, 1609).</text>

                <text>Breventano's treatise is mainly based on Aristotle's Ethics and Rhetoric, but other classical — as well as christian — authors are often quoted. A general introduction on the notion of virtue, very based on Cicero and Aristotle, is followed by sections devoted to specific virtues. Each chapter is completed by a tavola or albero aiming at a visual and easily memorisable representation of the virtue concerned. The last section focuses on the theological virtues (ff. 58v-71r). A second treatise by the same author dealing with sins follows in the manuscript (ff. 74r-125). NB: Most of the quotations from classical authors (including poets) are translated into vernacular. The copy is the autograph original version by Breventano, rich in marginal references to the sources quoted as well as in corrections and integrations. </text>

The work, published in 1549 and later reprinted (1551, 1559), was ready in 1548 - as confirmed by the dedicatory epistle to the Duke of Florence, Cosimo I de Medici, as well as by the autograph copy now in the Archivio di Stato of Florence (Cerchi 94). This copy, rich in annotations and corrections by Segni himself, is the text employed by the printer Lorenzo Torrentino and has been the object of a thorough study by Simone Bionda (cf. <text>Breventano's treatise on the natural elements opens with an interesting preface to the readers in which the author explains the importance of disseminating scientific culture not only through translations and commentaries, but through compendia as well (Plato and Aristotle are mentioned as the main authorities of the past). The work, at least in the very first general remarks, draws on Aristotle's natural philosophy (e.g. the reference to De coelo et mundo, book 3, at f. 7v), but in the following sections it refers to several other sources such as Pliny the Elder and some classical poets (e.g. the references to Ovid - with passages translated into vernacular). The compiler pays attention to recent sources andd description of natural phenomena as well (e.g. the examples recorded at the end of the treatise).</text>

                <text>The work is a thorough discussion of Aristotle's theory of dreams mainly based on the three Parva Naturalia which deal with the topic (On Sleep, On Dreams, On Divination in Sleep) as well as on Aristotle's On the Soul. As stated by the author of the preface letter, Antonino Compagna, Dottori's treatise on dreams draws from the teaching of Marco Antonio Passeri known as 'il Genoa'. Dottori refers to Passeri's private lectures at the very beginning of his work ('ne suoi privati ragionamenti', f. 1v). Other Aristotelian philosophers are discussed; three verses from Petrarch's Canzoniere are quoted at f. 20r (RVF, 29, 43-45). The text seems to be an interesting example of a vernacular reworking of discussions held in a Latinate context.</text>

Aristotle's Meteorology undoubtedly plays a main role among Breventano's sources, which are nonetheless extremely heterogeneous (Hippocrates, Seneca, Plinius the Elder stand out among the classical texts the author refers to and quote from, but it is worth remarking that Breventano turns to medieval contributions as well - e.g. Avicenna and Guillaume de Conches). The treatise is conceived as a complete catalogue of winds which follows a more general introduction to the topic. </text>

                <text>The Trattato is a summary of Aristotelian mistakes in the field of natural philosophy, with a special focus on cosmography and heavens. The author, Giovanni Maria Benedetti, refers to several Aristotelian passages as well as to more recent authors who followed the Greek philosopher (e.g. Alessandro Piccolomini). The first part of the treatise deals with the debate on the proportions of earth and water (interesting images of the sfera illustrating the previous positions alongside with the author's one, ff. 26r-30r); Benedetti goes then on with the discussion of the natural elements (mainly fire and air) as well as earthquakes. The text is very interesting for the many references to previous bibliography on the subject. The work opens with a preface which contains a strong criticism of the Aristotelian tradition of natural philosophy as a whole. </text>

                <text>Orazio Marta's commentary on Aristotle's Poetics was published after the death of the author by Carlo Tramontano, who signs the dedication letter to the Count of Lemos. The work appeared within a collection of Marta's Rime et prose which includes poems and three short treatises respectively on comedy (unfinished and mainly based on Aristotle), on translation and on the comparison between Frances Petrarch and Giovanni Della Casa - whose poems, commented by Sertorio Quattromani, follow in the 1616 Neapolitan edition of Marta's works. The Spositione della poetica covers the three first main sections of the treatise below Lodovico Castelvetro's division (the third is actually commented till chapter 7 - i.e. particella settima). The commentary is conceived as a sort of reworking of Castelvetro's one, which is explicitly mentioned in the title. </text>
