</text>

<text>The work is a thorough discussion of Aristotle's theory of dreams mainly based on the three Parva Naturalia which deal with the topic (On Sleep, On Dreams, On Divination in Sleep) as well as on Aristotle's On the Soul. As stated by the author of the preface letter, Antonino Compagna, Dottori's treatise on dreams draws from the teaching of Marco Antonio Passeri known as 'il Genoa'. Dottori refers to Passeri's private lectures at the very beginning of his work ('ne suoi privati ragionamenti', f. 1v). Other Aristotelian philosophers are discussed; three verses from Petrarch's Canzoniere are quoted at f. 20r (RVF, 29, 43-45). The text seems to be an interesting example of a vernacular reworking of discussions held in a Latinate context.</text>

Di V. Ill. et molto Reveren. Signoria Servitor di cuore Stefano Breventano.

<[*3]r-v> AGLI HUMANISSIMI LETTORI / Il Breventano.

<[1]r-37v> TRATTATO DE / GLI ELEMENTI, RACCOL- / TO IN BREVE SOMMARIO DA VARI / auttori per M. Stefano Breuentano, / Cittadino Pauese. Amen. Il fine.

<text>Breventano's treatise on the natural elements opens with an interesting preface to the readers in which the author explains the importance of disseminating scientific culture not only through translations and commentaries, but through compendia as well (Plato and Aristotle are mentioned as the main authorities of the past). The work, at least in the very first general remarks, draws on Aristotle's natural philosophy (e.g. the reference to De coelo et mundo, book 3, at f. 7v), but in the following sections it refers to several other sources such as Pliny the Elder and some classical poets (e.g. the references to Ovid - with passages translated into vernacular). The compiler pays attention to recent sources andd description of natural phenomena as well (e.g. the examples recorded at the end of the treatise).</text>

<p. 57> secondo / Della ottima Republica di Socrate. / Capitolo primo.

The work, published in 1549 and later reprinted (1551, 1559), was ready in 1548 - as confirmed by the dedicatory epistle to the Duke of Florence, Cosimo I de Medici, as well as by the autograph copy now in the Archivio di Stato of Florence (Cerchi 94). This copy, rich in annotations and corrections by Segni himself, is the text employed by the printer Lorenzo Torrentino and has been the object of a thorough study by Simone Bionda (cf. <5r> Trattato dell'ANIMA d'Aristotile tradocto / da M. Paulo del Rosso.
