The compendium follows the structure and mostly the contents of the Nicomachean Ethics, so that this is very close to being a shortened paraphrase. The only part really missing seems to be that on contemplation in Book X and that on the problem of willing but not performing the good in Book IX (the works seems to go through Book VIII on friendship only). Though Aristotle is rarely mentioned, the Introduzione alla morale is clearly based on the Nicomachean Ethics, as it appears from the long section on virtues as medium terms among opposite vices, as well as in the final section on justice. The work is very close in content and structure to the Introduzione alle virtù morali witnessed by ms. Bologna, BArch, 1685, of which it might be a reworking or an alternative version.

The Discorso breve, dedicated to Alfonso Cavazzi, count of Somaglia, opens with a polemical preamble referring to a previous work by Bernardino Baldini (Bernardini Baldini Lusus ad m. Antonium Baldinum fratris filium, Milan: 1586). The short vernacular lecture deals with the division of arts and sciences following Aristotle as its main source. Aristotelian works such as Nicomachean Ethics, Politics, On the Soul, Metaphysics, Rhetoric and Poetics are often quoted and presented as fundamental references relevant to the topic approached. Baldini refers to some commentators of Aristotle as well as to other classical sources (e.g. Cicero, Plato, Galen etc.).

An account of the resource
The printed edition is a collection of three different philosophical works: the book opens with Epictetus' Moral Philosophy, goes on with the pseudo-aristotelian treatise On Virtues and Vices and ends up with Plutarch's On Brotherly Love. Each translation is dedicated to a specific dedicatee. The Aristotelian section is all the more important because it presents the first printed vernacular translation of the treatise On Virtues and Vices which had quite a large circulation, though mainly in Latin, throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
