Di V. Ill. et molto Reveren. Signoria Servitor di cuore Stefano Breventano.

<[*3]r-v> AGLI HUMANISSIMI LETTORI / Il Breventano.

<[*4]r> IL SIG. <[*4]v> DEL SIG. SILVESTRO BOTTI- / gella Academico Affidato, detto lo Yguale. <inc> Attiche, Etrusche, mai carte latine / Non dier sì ricco e luminoso loco, / Acqua chiudendo in lor, Terra, Aria e Foco / Com'hor fan queste in tal soggetto fine.

<[1]r-37v> TRATTATO DE / GLI ELEMENTI, RACCOL- / TO IN BREVE SOMMARIO DA VARI / auttori per M. Stefano Breuentano, / Cittadino Pauese. Amen. Il fine.

Aristotle's Meteorology undoubtedly plays a main role among Breventano's sources, which are nonetheless extremely heterogeneous (Hippocrates, Seneca, Plinius the Elder stand out among the classical texts the author refers to and quote from, but it is worth remarking that Breventano turns to medieval contributions as well - e.g. Avicenna and Guillaume de Conches). The treatise is conceived as a complete catalogue of winds which follows a more general introduction to the topic. </text>

The work, at least in the very first general remarks, draws on Aristotle's natural philosophy (e.g. the reference to De coelo et mundo, book 3, at f. 7v), but in the following sections it refers to several other sources such as Pliny the Elder and some classical poets (e.g. the references to Ovid - with passages translated into vernacular). The compiler pays attention to recent sources andd description of natural phenomena as well (e.g. the examples recorded at the end of the treatise).</text>

<text>Breventano's treatise is mainly based on Aristotle's Ethics and Rhetoric, but other classical — as well as christian — authors are often quoted. A general introduction on the notion of virtue, very based on Cicero and Aristotle, is followed by sections devoted to specific virtues. Each chapter is completed by a tavola or albero aiming at a visual and easily memorisable representation of the virtue concerned. The last section focuses on the theological virtues (ff. 58v-71r). A second treatise by the same author dealing with sins follows in the manuscript (ff. 74r-125). NB: Most of the quotations from classical authors (including poets) are translated into vernacular.
