Antonio Guarino's Le mechanice is the first Italian translation of and commentary on the pseudo-Aristotelian Mechanics. Guarino, who worked as inspector of fortifications for the duke Alfonso II d'Este of Modena was acquainted with Greek and translated the text from the original. Cf. the work of his colleague Giovanni Battista Aleotti who translated Hero's Pneumatics from Greek into Italian (Gli artifitiosi et curiosi moti spiritali di Herrone, Ferrara: Vittorio Baldini, 1589).
